Consumers are creatures of habit: they buy the same products over and over again and are so familiar with major brands and the colors and logos that represent them that they can register a brand they like without a conscious thought process. Consumer goods packaging is therefore a key means of placing the brand and product in our baskets.
However, understanding how consumers make decisions and the key role of packaging in this process has been a neglected area of research. This is surprising given that companies invest large sums of money in developing packaging that they believe is effective – especially at the retail level.
Our Decision Research Center at Leeds University Business School is currently working in partnership with Faraday Packaging in this area. He has already provided some important insights that challenge the way companies think about consumer choice.

IELTS reading answers, part two
The research is focused on two basic ways of thinking. On the one hand, there is "heuristic processing", which requires very shallow thinking and is based on very simple rules: 1) buy what you recognize, 2) choose what you did last time, or 3) choose , which suggests a reliable source .
This requires relatively little effort and only requires looking at - and thinking about - a small amount of product and packaging information. This can be done with little or no conscious thought.
On the other hand, "systematic processing" involves much deeper levels of thinking. When people choose goods in this way, they resort to very detailed analytical thinking - taking into account information about the product, including price, perceived quality, etc. This form of thinking, which is both analytical and conscious, requires much more mental effort.

The role of packaging is likely to play a very different role in each of these types of decisions. For example, with heuristic processing, consumers may only need to be able to distinguish a package from those of competitors since they make their choices based on what they normally do.

How consumers decide to read answers, part four

Consumers want to be able to compare a product with the competition to see which option is better for them. The crucial role of packaging in this situation is to communicate the product's characteristics and highlight its advantages in relation to potential competition.
So when are people likely to adopt a certain mindset? First, we know that humans are cognitive misers; In other words, they save on thinking because it requires little effort.
In principle, people engage in complex, systematic processing only when the situation warrants it, for example when they are not tired or distracted and the purchase is important to them.

Second, there is a limit to the amount of information people can absorb. So if we present too much, they get confused. This, in turn, will probably make them back off and choose something else.
Third, people often lack the necessary knowledge or experience to deal with things they don't already understand, such as food ingredients.
And fourth, people differ in the extent to which they enjoy thinking. Our research distinguished between people with high thinking needs - who regularly engage in analytical thinking - and people with low cognitive needs, who prefer very simple forms of thinking.

Effectiveness varies
This work has important implications for packaging, as what makes packaging effective likely depends on the type of processing strategy consumers use when choosing between products. If you want to develop relevant packaging, you need to understand how consumers choose your products.
